What Is ESD? Why Is It Critically Important in Industry?

In today’s industrial world, the importance of electronic components grows alongside their functionality. While new technologies allow for smaller, more sophisticated devices, they also make production processes significantly more sensitive. One of the most critical threats to this sensitivity is ESD (Electrostatic Discharge)—a danger that is often invisible to the naked eye but capable of causing severe damage. Let’s take a closer look at this threat and explore how to manage it:
What is ESD?
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is defined as "the sudden and temporary flow of electricity between two objects with different electrical charges when they touch or come close to each other." It is the same small electric shock you feel when touching a doorknob in daily life. While this current does not pose a vital risk to human health, it can cause microscopic damage to electronic components, rendering millions of dollars worth of products useless on the production floor.
How Does ESD Occur?
Three basic elements are sufficient for ESD to occur:
- Charge Accumulation: Many objects, such as the human body, plastic surfaces, and rubber-soled shoes, can carry a static charge.
- Insulative Surfaces & Environment: Carpets, plastic floors, and dry air conditions facilitate charge buildup.
- Contact or Proximity: When a charged object touches or gets close to a sensitive electronic part, discharge occurs.
ESD often happens undetected. The human body cannot feel an electrostatic discharge below 3,000 volts. However, an ESD discharge of just 30 volts is enough to damage a sensitive component and cause device failure.
What are the Risks Posed by ESD?
A significant portion of production losses, quality drops, and customer complaints in industrial facilities stems from unnoticed ESD damage. Especially in sectors working with sensitive components—such as electronics, defense, automotive, aerospace, and medical—failing to take precautions against ESD poses a massive risk.
How to Protect Against ESD?
Can we completely eliminate the silent and hidden danger of ESD? It may not be possible to eliminate ESD entirely in production environments. However, a controlled area can be created and its negative effects can be minimized. Three main measures can be taken to protect against the harmful effects of ESD:
- 1. Creating an ESD Protected Area (EPA)
- Grounded floor coverings should be used.
- Antistatic table mats and ESD chairs should be used.
- Personnel should use grounding wrist straps and heel/foot straps, and awareness should be increased through proper training.
2. 2. ESD-Compliant Production Processes
- Control of humidity levels in the production area (to minimize the risk of electrostatic discharge, the ideal relative humidity should be maintained between 40% and 60%). ideal bağıl nem oranı %40 ile %60 arasında tutulmalıdır.)
- Reducing surfaces that can carry static charge.
- Using antistatic clothing and equipment.
3. 3. ESD Protective Packaging and Transportation Products
- Depending on the characteristics of the products, Faraday cage shielding bags or antistatic bags can be used. Alternatively, products can be wrapped with antistatic stretch film. faraday kafesli ya da antistatik poşetler kullanılabilirken, alternatif olarak antistatik streçe sarılı olarak tutulmalı.
- During product transfer, conductive boxes and trays should be used.
The Importance of Antistatic Packaging
The risks of ESD are not confined to the production floor; they persist during transfer and storage. Failure to take precautions can lead to more than just component damage; depending on the sector, it can result in catastrophic outcomes like warehouse fires. ESD-protected packaging plays a vital role in ensuring both sustainable quality and facility safety.
For companies exporting to European and American markets, using ESD-compliant packaging has become a requirement. Many major buyers demand packaging solutions that comply with international standards such as IEC 61340-5-1.

Creating ESD Awareness: Why This Blog Exists
The purpose of this blog is not only to introduce our products, but also to share knowledge and raise awareness about the negative effects of ESD. Our goal is to highlight the importance of ESD in manufacturing and emphasize that quality production is built on knowledge.
Founded with the belief that “knowledge is power,” Öney Mühendislik aims to become both a knowledge resource and a solution partner for companies that want to improve quality and safety in their production processes.
Summary
- ESD is an invisible risk that cannot be seen or easily detected, yet it can cause serious damage to products.
- Production environments without proper ESD awareness may face significant risks.
- One of the most effective ways to control ESD is to use packaging that provides the appropriate level of ESD protection depending on the product’s characteristics, and to ensure that production and storage areas meet the necessary ESD protection standards.
- Using ESD-protected packaging helps ensure that the end user receives a fully functional product and builds trust in the brand.
